Aiming to Transform Forestry in South Africa and beyond
The numbers speak for themselves: eucalyptus cuttings treated with OptiCept’s technology are showing an average rooting rate increase of at least 77% per customer!
OptiCept has been conducting an extensive research project aimed at improving the propagation and growth rates of pine cuttings. The results so far have been overwhelmingly positive, confirming that OptiBoost enhances the rooting rate of pine cuttings while also accelerating their growth rate by more than 10%.
The forestry industry is witnessing a transformative shift in cultivation efficiency, thanks to OptiCept Technologies and its groundbreaking OptiBoost technology.
In collaboration with leading forestry companies in South Africa, OptiCept has been conducting an extensive research project aimed at improving the propagation and growth rates of pine cuttings. The results so far have been overwhelmingly positive, confirming that OptiBoost enhances the rooting rate of pine cuttings while also accelerating their growth rate by more than 10%.
This advancement means that cuttings can be planted at least one week earlier than before, marking a significant milestone in forestry management.
Launched in the fall of 2024, this ambitious project brings together global leaders in forestry and paper production, including Mondi Group and Sappi. OptiCept Technologies has been at the forefront of this initiative, aiming to refine cultivation techniques and optimize plant propagation. In January 2025, the company shared the first interim results, and now, further progress can be reported with even more promising findings.
One of the most significant breakthroughs of this project is the enhanced rooting rate of pine cuttings. A higher rooting success rate means that a greater number of cuttings successfully develop into fully mature trees, increasing efficiency and reducing waste in the cultivation process. While initial testing had only been conducted on eucalyptus, the latest results now confirm that pine cuttings also benefit from OptiBoost technology.
The growth rate is a critical factor in forestry cultivation, directly impacting production timelines and overall efficiency. Under normal conditions, it takes around 9–10 weeks for a cutting to reach a plantable stage. However, with the application of OptiBoost, this period is reduced by at least one week. This acceleration not only improves productivity but also enables forestry companies to expand their output without increasing resource consumption.
Mother plants play a crucial role in the propagation process, providing cuttings that are later cultivated into full-grown trees. However, as they age, their productivity declines, especially true in the case of pine, leading to higher costs and lower efficiency. The OptiBoost technology has demonstrated an ability to improve the rooting success rate of cuttings taken from older mother plants, effectively extending their productive lifespan. This results in substantial cost savings, as forestry companies can maintain high-quality propagation without frequent replacement of mother plants.
The integration of vacuum impregnation technology through OptiBoost is proving to be a game-changer for the forestry industry. By improving the cultivation efficiency of both pine and eucalyptus, the technology enables forestry companies to reduce costs, optimize resource usage, and increase overall production capacity. These advancements align with sustainability goals, ensuring that forestry operations can meet growing global demands while minimizing environmental impact.
Thomas Lundqvist, CEO of OptiCept Technologies, expressed his enthusiasm about the progress and potential of the OptiBoost technology in the forestry sector:
With these promising results, OptiCept Technologies continues to push the boundaries of innovation in the forestry industry. As research and development progress, further advancements in plant propagation efficiency are expected, paving the way for a more sustainable and economically viable future. OptiBoost is set to become a cornerstone technology in modern forestry, benefiting companies, environmental sustainability, and global supply chains alike.
