Exciting things are happening for OptiCept Technologies in South Africa. The numbers speak for themselves: eucalyptus cuttings treated with OptiCept’s technology are showing an average rooting rate increase of at least 77% per customer!
The forestry industry is witnessing a transformative shift in cultivation efficiency, thanks to OptiCept Technologies and its groundbreaking OptiBoost technology. In collaboration with leading forestry companies in South Africa, OptiCept has been conducting an extensive research project aimed at improving the propagation and growth rates of pine cuttings. The results so far have been overwhelmingly positive, confirming that OptiBoost enhances the rooting rate of pine cuttings while also accelerating their growth rate by more than 10%. This advancement means that cuttings can be planted at least one week earlier than before, marking a significant milestone in forestry management.
This groundbreaking project kicked off in the fall of 2024 with one clear mission: to introduce and commercialize OptiBoost technology in the South African forestry market. Now, just a few months in, the results are already proving that this technology has the potential to make a major impact.
So far, tests have been conducted with most of the eight participating companies, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. According to OptiCept’s CEO, Thomas Lundqvist, the team couldn’t be happier with the progress. “These are excellent results and everything we could have hoped for at this stage of the project,” he says. “We’ve learned a lot along the way, continually refining our methods. By working with local experts and collaborating closely with customers, we’re moving closer to securing commercial agreements.”
The project features some of the biggest players in the forestry industry. Among them is Mondi Group, a global leader in packaging and paper production. Mondi, listed on the Johannesburg and London stock exchanges, plants around 20 million eucalyptus cuttings each year. Another key participant is Sappi, a top supplier of wood fiber-based products with operations on three continents and a workforce of 11,600. Sappi’s annual planting volume is an impressive 27 million cuttings.
Other participants include Sutherland Seedlings, Ezigro, Du Roi Multiplant, York Timbers, CPS SeedlingsE TWK Agri. Together, these companies produce over 33 million cuttings annually. With this level of collaboration, the project has a massive reach and the potential to reshape the forestry landscape in South Africa.
South Africa is a global leader in the forestry and forest products sector, making it an ideal market for OptiBoost. The country boasts about 1.2 million hectares of cultivated forest, primarily eucalyptus, pine, and acacia. This thriving industry plays a significant role in the economy, and any advancements in efficiency and productivity are highly valuable.
OptiBoost technology brings something truly revolutionary to the table. By using the unique vacuum impregnation method, the technology significantly improves rooting rates for cuttings. This means more trees can be planted from the same volume of cuttings, resulting in greater returns for forestry companies.
As the project continues, OptiCept is focusing on refining its technology even further and strengthening relationships with its South African partners. These interim results are just the beginning, and there’s plenty of potential for even greater impact as the project progresses.
The success of this initiative could pave the way for broader adoption of OptiBoost technology across the forestry sector, not just in South Africa but globally. With companies like Mondi and Sappi already on board and seeing results, the future looks bright for both OptiCept and the forestry industry as a whole.
Stay tuned for more updates as OptiCept continues to transform forestry with innovation and collaboration!
